Definition: Reconstructionists are tasked with piecing together events after they occurred in order to understand exactly what happened.

Often called forensic engineers, reconstructionists apply their knowledge of physics to tragedies such as serious traffic crashes, train derailments and airplane crashes to determine the root cause and find out, if anyone, is at fault.

Reconstructionists may work closely with private investigators or attorneys, or government agents such as detectives and investigators in the event criminal charges are anticipated.
